What are veneers?

Let us start with the most common question: is there a difference between facings and veneers? No. Facings is the Dutch word, veneers the English one, but they mean exactly the same treatment. We use both terms interchangeably.

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or composite that is fixed to the front of a tooth. This lets you correct the colour, shape or position of your front teeth in one go. It is a minimally invasive alternative to a crown, because little or no tooth tissue is removed. For all the details of the treatment itself, read our page about veneers in Rotterdam West.

A veneer does not change your whole tooth, only the front that you show when you smile.

Composite or porcelain: the key difference

The biggest choice you make is the material. Both options look good, but they differ in price, lifespan and treatment time. Here is what it comes down to.

Composite veneers

  • One appointment. The dentist applies the composite directly onto the tooth and shapes it straight away.
  • Usually without grinding. We often place composite no-prep, so without removing any tooth tissue.
  • More affordable than porcelain, and a good way to first experience how a new shape feels.
  • Lasts five to eight years and is easy to touch up or replace later.

Porcelain veneers

  • Two appointments. The porcelain is custom-made in our own in-house laboratory.
  • Minimal enamel preparation of 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres, so the veneer fits neatly.
  • Aesthetically superior: porcelain reflects light just like natural enamel and keeps its colour.
  • Lasts ten to fifteen years and sometimes longer with good oral hygiene.

Our advice from the practice in Rotterdam West

If you want to touch up one or two teeth, or first see cautiously how a shape suits you, composite is often a fine start. If you are going for a full, long-lasting transformation of your smile, most patients choose porcelain.

Are veneers right for you?

Veneers are suitable for many common wishes about the front teeth. Think of stubbornly discoloured front teeth that no longer improve with whitening, small gaps between the teeth, slightly crooked teeth or a chipped corner. Many patients from Delfshaven and Middelland come to us with exactly these questions.

Even so, veneers are not the best choice in every situation. We do not simply recommend them when there is:

  • Very crooked teeth. Then an orthodontic treatment such as braces is often better, possibly followed by veneers.
  • Active cavities or inflamed gums. We treat those first, because a healthy foundation always comes first.
  • Severe grinding. Without protection, grinding can damage veneers.
  • Too little enamel. Veneers bond best to healthy enamel.

During a cosmetic consultation at Tandarts West in Rotterdam West we honestly assess whether veneers are the right solution, or whether another treatment will serve you better.

What do veneers cost?

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment and are therefore not reimbursed by the Dutch basic health insurance. The exact cost depends on the material and the number of teeth you want to treat. Porcelain is higher than composite, because it is custom-made in the laboratory.

What we consider important: you know in advance where you stand. At Tandarts West Rotterdam we always make a transparent cost estimate before we begin. The national reference prices are set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority and apply to every dentist in the Netherlands. You can find an overview on our page about the cost of veneers.

An honest cost estimate up front prevents surprises afterwards.

How the treatment works

The treatment always begins with a cosmetic consultation. We discuss your wish, assess your teeth and create a digital smile design with a 3D scan. This lets you see your new smile before we do anything to your teeth at all. Only when you are happy with the plan do we continue.

An important detail that many people do not know: veneers keep their colour once they are placed. If you also want a lighter tooth shade, the order matters. We first let you whiten your teeth to the desired shade and then place the veneers in exactly that tone. That way everything stays naturally matched.

With composite, we make the veneers directly in the mouth, usually in one appointment and often without anaesthesia. With porcelain, we work in two appointments: first the preparation with a 3D impression and temporary veneers, then placing the final veneers from our own laboratory. For patients who dread the treatment, we take all the time and calm they need, just as described on our page about the dentist for anxious patients in Rotterdam.
