A new smile is a lovely idea, but the first honest question most patients ask us is simple: what do veneers actually cost? At Tandarts West in Rotterdam West we would rather be clear about that up front than leave you guessing. The short answer is that the price depends mainly on the material and the number of teeth. Below our dentists explain the guide prices for composite and porcelain, what makes the total go up or down, and how you always know your own price in advance. Want to see how we place veneers? What do veneers cost?
First, briefly, what it is: a veneer (in Dutch "facing") is a thin shell of composite or porcelain that the dentist bonds to the front of a tooth to improve its colour, shape or position. Veneers and facings are the same treatment; only the word differs.
Let us answer the main question straight away. As a national indication, a composite veneer costs roughly 150 to 350 euro per tooth, and a porcelain veneer costs roughly 700 to 1000 euro per tooth. Composite is applied directly onto the tooth in a single appointment, while porcelain is custom-made in a dental laboratory, which is the main reason for the difference.
It is important to read these amounts for what they are: a guide price, an indication that applies across the Netherlands. They are not our own prices and certainly not a tempting "from" price. Your actual cost only becomes clear once we have looked at your teeth and your wish, and you receive that in writing before anything starts. You can find the full overview on our page about the cost of veneers.
| Type of veneer | Guide price per tooth | Six front teeth | Appointments | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Composite veneer | 150 to 350 euro | 900 to 2100 euro | 1 | 5 to 8 years |
| Porcelain veneer | 700 to 1000 euro | 4200 to 6000 euro | 2 | 10 to 15 years |
What do Lumineers and composite bonding cost?
Lumineers is a brand name for extra-thin porcelain veneers that are often placed with little or no grinding. In price they sit in the same range as porcelain veneers, roughly 700 to 1000 euro per tooth, sometimes a little above because of the brand and the laboratory. Composite bonding is another term for a composite veneer or a small composite build-up on a single tooth, for example to repair a chipped corner or close a small gap; expect the composite guide price of roughly 150 to 350 euro per tooth.
A guide price tells you the ballpark. A written estimate tells you your price.
Composite versus porcelain: why the price difference?
The single biggest factor in the cost is the material you choose. Both look good, but the way they are made explains why one is more affordable than the other.
Composite veneers
- Guide price of roughly 150 to 350 euro per tooth. More affordable, because there is no laboratory step.
- One appointment. The dentist applies the composite directly onto the tooth and shapes it straight away.
- Often without grinding. Composite is frequently placed no-prep, so without removing tooth tissue.
- Lasts five to eight years and is easy to touch up or repair later.
Porcelain veneers
- Guide price of roughly 700 to 1000 euro per tooth. Higher, because each veneer is individually crafted.
- Two appointments and laboratory work. A dental technician makes the porcelain to measure.
- Minimal enamel preparation of 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres, so the veneer fits neatly.
- Lasts ten to fifteen years and sometimes longer with good oral hygiene.
Honest advice from the practice in Rotterdam West
More expensive is not automatically better for you. For one or two teeth, or to first experience how a new shape feels, composite is often a sensible and cheaper start. Sometimes even whitening your own teeth is enough, and then veneers are not needed at all. We will always say so.
What determines the total price?
Two people can pay very different totals for veneers, and that is normal. The guide price per tooth is only the starting point. The final amount depends on a handful of factors:
- The material. Composite or porcelain, as explained above, is the biggest single factor.
- The number of teeth. Some people treat one chipped tooth, others want six front teeth matched.
- Laboratory work. Porcelain involves a dental technician, which composite does not.
- Preparation beforehand. If you want a lighter shade, we usually whiten first, which is a separate step with its own cost.
- The condition of your teeth. A healthy foundation comes first, so any cavities or gum issues are treated before veneers.
Because of all this, a general price online can only ever be an indication. That is exactly why we make everything concrete for your situation in a written estimate.
Worked example: six front teeth
To make the guide prices tangible, imagine you want to treat your six upper front teeth, which is a common wish. Using the national indications, the sums look like this:
- Six composite veneers: roughly 6 × 150 to 350 euro, so an indicative total of about 900 to 2,100 euro.
- Six porcelain veneers: roughly 6 × 700 to 1000 euro, so an indicative total of about 4,200 to 6,000 euro.
Please treat these totals as a rough indication only, not a quote. They show the order of magnitude and the gap between the two materials, so you can think it through calmly. Whether you truly need six veneers, or whether four teeth plus whitening gives the same effect for less, is something we work out together first.
The cheapest plan is often the one that treats only the teeth that really need it.
Are veneers reimbursed?
Veneers are almost always a cosmetic treatment, and cosmetic dentistry is usually not reimbursed by the Dutch basic health insurance. In most cases you pay for veneers yourself. Some supplementary dental policies contribute a limited amount towards cosmetic or restorative work, but this varies a great deal per insurer and per package, so always check your own policy terms first.
The national reference tariffs for dental care are set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) and apply to every dentist in the Netherlands. They are the source behind the guide prices in this article. For the full picture, see our page on the cost of veneers, or read more about the veneers treatment itself.
How you get a personal price at Tandarts West in Rotterdam West
Guide prices are useful, but you deserve to know your own price before you commit. This is how we handle cost at Tandarts West:
- A written estimate up front. After the consultation you receive a personal, written cost estimate, so there are no surprises later.
- Both materials on the table. We are not tied to porcelain, so we advise composite whenever it is the better and cheaper fit.
- Whitening first when it helps. If a lighter shade is your real wish, we discuss teeth whitening before any veneer is placed.
- Honest about alternatives. If veneers are not the sensible choice for your teeth, we will tell you and suggest what is.
