How long does getting a crown take? With our CEREC milling unit a crown is often ready in one appointment: digital scan, milled in the practice, placed the same day, with no temporary crown. For complex cases, bridges or front teeth we make it in our own lab, ready in two to three weeks.

What are dental crowns and bridges, and when are they needed?

A dental crown is a 'cap' of porcelain or zirconium placed over a severely damaged tooth to restore shape, function and appearance. Fully covers the visible tooth, usually needed for large fillings that are no longer reliable, after a root canal on a molar (to prevent fracture), broken tooth, or aesthetic correction of a severely discolored tooth.

At Tandarts West, your English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West at Taandersstraat 121, we work with an in-house dental laboratory. This means short turnaround, direct communication between dentist and technician, and the ability to match color and shape exactly to your neighbors. We work biomimetically: preserve as much of your own tooth structure as possible with materials mimicking natural properties. Your treatment is often in the hands of experienced all-round dentist Nilgun Dogan.

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth via a combination of crowns and pontics. The bridge rests on your own adjacent teeth (ground down for it) or on dental implants.

Loose or broken crown

Loose or broken crown, or a bridge that came off? What to do

Acting calmly and quickly prevents damage to the tooth underneath. During opening hours we help you in Rotterdam West with priority.

Is your crown loose or has your crown broken off? Call us during opening hours on 010 846 6539, so we can schedule you as soon as possible to re-cement the crown or replace it. Keep the loose crown, do not chew on it and keep the tooth underneath clean. The same goes for a bridge that came loose or a pontic that detaches. Outside opening hours, emergency care in the Rotterdam region runs via the emergency service and Tandartsenpost010, we have no evening or weekend opening of our own.

A loose or broken crown is usually not an acute emergency, but it is something to have checked quickly so the underlying tooth does not get further damaged or sensitive. In many cases an intact crown can simply be re-cemented. If the crown itself is damaged or no longer fits, we make a new one. A loose bridge, or a bridge where an abutment lets go, needs the same quick assessment. Read our blog in detail on what to do when a crown or bridge comes loose or breaks. A crown often follows a root canal treatment, because a root-canal-treated tooth is more prone to fracture and is protected by a crown.

Materials

Which materials do we use?

We work with the most modern materials, each with their own strengths.

Porcelain (lithium-disilicate)

Aesthetically the most natural: translucent, detailed color matching. Ideal for front teeth where appearance matters. High strength for daily chewing, modern porcelain lasts 10-15 years.

Zirconium (zirconium oxide)

Extremely strong, virtually unbreakable. First choice for molars with high bite force, or patients who grind/clench. Slightly less translucent than porcelain, but modern zirconium looks very natural.

In-house dental lab

Making crowns in-house lets us match color and shape exactly. Short turnaround, no external lab delays, direct dentist-technician communication.

The treatment

Crown placement in 4 steps

From 3D scan to final crown, all in our practice in Rotterdam West.

1

3D scan + planning

Digital 3D scan, photos, discussion of material choice. Together we decide porcelain or zirconium.

2

Prep + temporary

Under local anesthesia tooth is prepared. Digital impression sent to our in-house lab. Temporary crown placed.

3

Lab production

Final crown custom-made in our practice lab in 1-2 weeks. Direct dentist-technician communication.

Crown in one appointment

CEREC crown: often your crown in one appointment

Our practice has its own CEREC milling unit. We design and mill a crown digitally in the practice, so in many cases you go home the same day with a definitive crown.

1

Digital scan

We take a 3D scan of your tooth. No impression paste, just exact digital precision.

2

Milled in the practice

The crown is designed on the computer and milled straight from a ceramic block in our own milling unit.

3

Placed right away

During the same appointment we fit and bond the crown. No temporary crown, no second visit.

Honest about the limit

When chairside with CEREC, when our own lab?

Not every crown can be done in one appointment. For complex cases, bridges or front teeth where aesthetics matter, our own dental laboratory stays the better route. Both deliver a high-quality crown.

Often one appointment

CEREC, milled chairside

  • Often ready in one appointment, the same day
  • No temporary crown and no second visit
  • No impression paste, just a digital scan
  • Great for a crown on a molar
  • Not suitable for every situation
For complex cases

In-house dental laboratory

  • The better route for complex cases and bridges
  • Finest color and shape matching for front teeth
  • Our technician finishes the aesthetics by hand
  • Ready in two to three weeks, two appointments
  • A temporary crown while you wait

The NZa rate for a crown on a natural tooth is the same, whether we mill it chairside with CEREC or make it in our own lab. We advise per situation which route fits best.
