What is a dental implant, and when is it the right choice?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of medical-grade titanium that is placed in the jawbone to serve as the foundation for a crown, bridge or overdenture. After a healing period of 3 to 6 months, the implant fuses with the bone (osseo-integration), after which the final restoration is placed. The result: a replacement tooth that feels, functions and looks like your own.

At Tandarts West, an English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West at Taandersstraat 121, we place dozens of dental implants every year for patients from Delfshaven, Middelland, Nieuwe Westen, Bospolder-Tussendijken, Spangen, and from across the international community in Rotterdam. We use 3D CBCT scanning for precise planning and have an in-house dental laboratory so the crown on your implant fits perfectly.

Dental implants are particularly attractive because, unlike a bridge, they don't put strain on adjacent teeth and they stimulate the jawbone, preventing further bone loss. With good oral hygiene, an implant is a lifelong solution.

3 reasons for implants

Why dental implants are the standard for missing teeth

Three qualities that set dental implants apart from a traditional bridge or removable denture.

Preserves your healthy teeth

Unlike a bridge, neighboring healthy teeth do not need to be ground down. The implant stands on its own and doesn't burden your own teeth.

Prevents jawbone loss

When a tooth is missing, the jawbone shrinks. An implant stimulates the bone like a real tooth root and keeps your jaw at its proper level for the long term.

Lifetime durability

The implant itself lasts a lifetime. The crown on top lasts 10-15 years before replacement makes sense. No 5-year replacement cycles like with traditional bridges.

The treatment

Dental implant in 4 steps

From the first consultation to the final crown, bridge or overdenture.

1

Consultation + 3D scan

30-45 minute intake, 3D CBCT scan of your jaw, personal treatment plan and cost estimate. Free of charge.

2

Implant placement

Under local anesthesia, the implantologist places the titanium implant in the jawbone. 30-60 minutes per implant.

3

Healing (3-6 months)

The implant fuses with the jawbone (osseo-integration). You wear a temporary restoration during this period.

4

Final restoration

Placement of the final crown, bridge or overdenture. Full chewing function and natural appearance restored.

Traditional bridge

Frequently asked questions

Dental implants · FAQ

The questions patients and searchers ask us about implantology in Rotterdam West.

What exactly is a dental implant?
An artificial tooth root made of medical-grade titanium, placed in the jawbone. After 3-6 months of healing (osseo-integration), it serves as foundation for a crown, bridge or overdenture.
How much do dental implants cost in Rotterdam?
Depends on number of implants, type of crown, any bone augmentation and gum pre-treatment. We provide a transparent estimate at Tandarts West Rotterdam West according to Dutch NZa tariffs. Request a quote.
How long does a dental implant last?
The implant itself can last a lifetime with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups. The crown lasts 10-15 years on average.
How long does the whole treatment take?
Implant placement 30-60 min per implant. Healing 3-6 months. Then final restoration. Total: 4-8 months.
Is dental implant placement painful?
No pain during the procedure due to local anesthesia. Some swelling or sensitivity after, comparable to a tooth extraction.
Which English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West does implants?
Tandarts West at Taandersstraat 121 has an experienced implantologist in Rotterdam and English-speaking team. Call 010 846 6539 for a free consultation.
Does my Dutch health insurance cover an implant?
Basic insurance covers implants only in specific medical cases (cleft lip, severely shrunken jawbone). For standard cases you rely on supplementary insurance.
Can everyone get a dental implant?
Most adults with enough jawbone. Contraindications: too little bone (often solvable), active periodontitis, severe diabetes, pregnancy. Individually assessed with 3D scan.
What's the difference between implant and bridge?
Bridge rests on adjacent teeth (which are ground down). Implant stands alone in the bone, doesn't affect neighbors. Implants last longer and prevent bone loss.
Can you have an overdenture on implants?
Yes, an overdenture on 2, 4 or 6 implants is an excellent solution for multiple missing teeth.
My implant hurts, is that normal?
Mild sensitivity or soreness in the first days after an implant is placed is normal and settles by itself, an ordinary painkiller such as paracetamol helps. Pain that only starts weeks or months later or comes back, especially with swelling, a bad taste or a loose feeling, is not normal and can point to an inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis). Contact Tandarts West in Rotterdam West and we will take a quick look for you.
Titanium or zirconia crown on an implant?
On a dental implant we usually place a crown of porcelain or zirconia, while the implant itself is titanium. Zirconia is metal-free and is often chosen for visible front teeth because of its natural colour, porcelain on a strong base is excellent for molars. During the consultation we advise what suits your situation best.
