What does emergency treatment cost?
Emergency treatments follow the same nationally fixed NZa rates as regular treatments. An acute consultation costs roughly €26 to €78, depending on the treatment needed. For after-hours care at the emergency service, their own rates with an out-of-hours surcharge apply.
Can I get emergency care if I am not a patient?

What if I have acute toothache during Ramadan?
Pain relief comes first. Call 010 846 6539 immediately. If severe toothache threatens your health, you are allowed to break your fast to be treated, you can make up the day later (qada).

What does Invisalign cost in Rotterdam?
Costs vary between 2,500 and 6,500 euros depending on complexity and number of aligners. We always discuss a clear estimate in advance, no surprises. For young people under 18, orthodontics is partly reimbursed through the basic health insurance.
Is tartar removal reimbursed by my health insurance?
Adults: dental cleaning falls under the supplementary dental insurance, not the basic insurance. The basic package does cover periodontitis treatment (M-codes). Children under 18: full reimbursement from the basic insurance. Our reception is happy to help you check your policy.

What if I cannot pay my Infomedics invoice?
If you cannot pay in one go, Infomedics offers two options. You can move the payment date forward yourself by up to 4 weeks, or you can request a payment plan to pay in instalments at no extra cost. Invoices from 30 to 150 euro are paid in up to 3 instalments, from 150 euro in up to 5 instalments. Arrange this in time via infomedics.nl, because collection costs can increase once a reminder has been sent.
Does Tandarts West also treat kids (paediatric dentist Rotterdam)?
Can a child use an electric toothbrush?
From around age 3 there are special children's electric toothbrushes. Up to that age it is better to use a soft children's brush manually. Important: up to age 8 a parent should always brush over after the child.

When should I first take my child to the dentist?
From the moment the first tooth erupts, usually around 6 months. A first introduction before the second year of life is the recommendation of the KNMT (Dutch Dental Association). At Tandarts West Rotterdam, we plan this first appointment in a playful way so that your child has a positive first experience.
Do cavities in baby teeth need to be filled?
Yes. Untreated cavities in baby teeth cause pain, infections and can damage the underlying permanent tooth bud. In addition, the cavity bacteria spread to neighbouring teeth and to the permanent teeth. That is why we always treat them.
My child is losing baby teeth earlier or later than average, is that a problem?
A deviation of about a year is normal. Losing baby teeth usually starts around age 6 and continues until about age 12. We monitor this every six months during check-ups at Tandarts West Rotterdam, and only intervene in case of real deviations.
How much fluoride does a child need?
Up to age 2: a smear of fluoride toothpaste with 500 ppm. From 2 to 5 years: a pea-sized amount of 1000-1450 ppm. From age 5: the same dosage as adults. Brush twice a day and do not rinse with water afterwards, just spit out.
What does Tandarts West Rotterdam do especially for children?
We have a special children's corner in the waiting room, schedule extra time for young children, use child-friendly explanations and toys (such as our toy dragon Tandi), and build trust gradually through multiple introductory visits. Our dentists are trained in pediatric dentistry.
Invisalign and orthodontics
How long does an Invisalign treatment take?
On average an Invisalign treatment takes 12 to 18 months, depending on the complexity. During an intake we discuss a realistic timeline for your situation.
Which toothbrush is good for people with braces?
For fixed braces: an orthodontic brush head with V-shaped bristle pattern. For Invisalign: a regular soft toothbrush, plus daily cleaning of the aligners with lukewarm water and mild soap.

What exactly is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment using clear, custom-made aligners that gradually move your teeth into the correct position. You wear each aligner for 1 to 2 weeks, then move on to the next. A complete treatment consists on average of 20 to 40 aligners.
Is Invisalign just as effective as traditional braces?
For light to moderate corrections, Invisalign is just as effective as traditional braces. For very complex tooth alignment issues, traditional fixed braces may be more suitable. During the intake we assess whether Invisalign fits your situation.
How many hours a day do I need to wear the aligners?
At least 22 hours a day, only removed during eating, drinking (anything other than water) and brushing. This is essential for the result. Patients who wear their aligners less see slower progress or have to make additional aligners.
Oral hygiene and tartar
Is an electric toothbrush really better than a manual one?
Cochrane Reviews from 2014 and 2022 show that electric toothbrushes remove on average 11% more plaque after 1 month and 21% more after 3 months. For most people that makes a noticeable difference, especially with oscillating-rotating brushes.

How often should I replace my toothbrush?
Every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles splay out. After flu or a throat infection, replace immediately to prevent reinfection. Electric brush heads follow the same rule.

Can I brush my teeth during fasting?
Yes, you may brush carefully without swallowing water or toothpaste. Many Muslims choose to brush before Suhoor and after Iftar to make sure the fast is not broken.

Can I remove tartar myself?
No. Tartar is calcified plaque and can only be removed professionally with ultrasonic instruments or hand instruments by a dental hygienist or dentist. Scraping it off yourself with tools from the drugstore damages your enamel and gums and is risky.
Does tartar removal hurt?
With healthy gums, dental cleaning is usually uncomfortable but not painful. When the gums are inflamed it can be sensitive. In that case we use an ultrasonic device with warm water, or for severe sensitivity an anaesthetic. Pain-free cleaning is always our starting point.
What is the difference between plaque and tartar?
Plaque is a soft, sticky bacterial film that forms on your teeth every day. It can be brushed away with good oral hygiene. Tartar is plaque that has hardened due to minerals in saliva, usually within 48 hours. Tartar can no longer be brushed away, only removed professionally.
Teeth whitening and aesthetics
Can I whiten my teeth if I have fillings?
Composite fillings do not whiten along with natural teeth. We always discuss the options in advance so you know what to expect and we reach the best result together.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, teeth whitening is safe when carried out under the supervision of a dentist. We use whitening agents within the European safety directives (a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide for adults). Beforehand, we examine your teeth for cavities, leaking fillings and gum problems to rule out any risks.
Is teeth whitening bad for your teeth?
Whitening your teeth under professional supervision is not bad for them, provided it stays within the EU directive (max 6% hydrogen peroxide) and you have a healthy set of teeth. Uncontrolled whitening with online or foreign products (often 35% peroxide) can, however, lead to enamel damage, lasting sensitivity and gum irritation. That is why we believe teeth whitening should always take place at a dentist, not at home with experiments.
What is the difference with drugstore whitening products?
Drugstore products are limited to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide and therefore deliver minimal results. Online and foreign products sometimes contain higher concentrations, but without professional supervision you risk enamel damage, gum irritation and lasting sensitivity. A professional whitening treatment works faster and more safely.
Which whitening product does Tandarts West use?
We work with BlancOne, a professional whitening system developed by IDS SpA in Italy. BlancOne uses hydrogen peroxide within the European safety directive (a maximum of 6%) and is applied exclusively by dentists. Depending on your wishes we use BlancOne Click or Click+ in the practice, or the Home Night+ at-home kit with custom-fitted trays. Other dentists can purchase BlancOne in the Netherlands through BrightDental.nl.
How long does a whitening treatment take?
An in-practice whitening session takes about 60 to 90 minutes. For the at-home whitening kit we make custom-fitted trays in one appointment, after which you can whiten at home for 1 to 2 weeks (15 to 30 minutes per day).
Will fillings, crowns or veneers also whiten?
No, whitening agents only work on natural tooth tissue. Composite fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour. Do they have a prominent place in your smile? Then we discuss whether it makes sense to replace them after whitening.
Will I have sensitive teeth after whitening?
Mild sensitivity to cold can occur in the first 24 to 48 hours. This goes away on its own. During that period we recommend sensitive-teeth toothpaste and avoiding extremely cold or hot drinks.
Can anyone get their teeth whitened?
Teeth whitening is suitable for most adults aged 18 and over with a healthy set of teeth. During pregnancy or breastfeeding we postpone the treatment. In the case of active cavities, inflamed gums or untreated holes, we treat those first, then whiten afterwards.

Does a root canal treatment hurt?
We always work under local anaesthetic. The procedure itself is painless. Afterwards you may have mild sensitivity for one or two days, which fades quickly.

What if I feel pain during the treatment?
Agree on a hand signal in advance, for example raising your hand. The dentist will then stop immediately. Additional anaesthesia can always be given; no patient has to grit their teeth through pain.

Which treatments does Tandarts West schedule during Ramadan?
Routine check-ups, dental cleaning, small fillings and non-invasive consultations are scheduled as usual. We recommend scheduling major procedures such as implants or crowns outside the fasting period, unless medically necessary.

Dental anxiety and comfort
Can I get medication for dental anxiety?
Yes, in consultation with your GP, a mild anti-anxiety medication can be prescribed that you take before the appointment. At Tandarts West Rotterdam we also work with centres that offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or sedation for patients with severe dental anxiety.

A soft toothbrush is the best advice in 95% of cases. Harder brushes can damage your gums and wear down enamel. With healthy gums medium is fine too, but we almost never recommend hard brushes.

Can I schedule a dental appointment during Ramadan?
Yes, check-ups, small fillings and dental cleaning can take place during fasting without breaking your fast. At Tandarts West Rotterdam we take your wishes into account and during Ramadan we often schedule appointments in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Does anesthesia break the fast?
According to most Islamic scholars, local anesthesia does not break the fast, provided that no fluid reaches the throat. Do not rinse and do not swallow water or saliva mixed with anesthetic. If in doubt, ask your imam for personal advice.

Switching, costs and dental visits
Can you just switch to a new dentist?
Yes, in the Netherlands you have free choice of care provider, so you can switch to a new dentist without giving a reason and free of charge. Do check whether the practice is accepting new patients, as Tandarts West has no waiting list. Ask your old practice to transfer your records and X-rays, which they are required to do on request.
Is once a year at the dentist enough?
For adults with a healthy mouth and good oral hygiene, one check-up a year can be enough. If you have a higher risk, for example due to earlier cavities, gum problems or smoking, more often is needed, usually twice a year. Children also need more frequent visits. Your dentist sets the interval together with you.
Which dentist should you choose if you are anxious?

Can you go to the dentist while on blood thinners?
Yes, you can be treated as usual if you use blood thinners. Always report your medication on the health questionnaire. For most treatments you do not need to stop. For a procedure such as extracting a tooth, the dentist will consult your doctor or thrombosis service if needed. Never stop your medication yourself without consulting them.

Can you be registered with two dentists?
For your regular care you register with one permanent dentist, so your records and check-ups are kept in one place. For a second opinion or a specific treatment you can see another dentist. Being registered with two practices at the same time for regular care is impractical and unusual.

What happens if I don't go to the dentist for 5 years?
Cavities, tartar and gum inflammation often develop without pain and become larger and more expensive to treat after years. After such a long time we schedule a comprehensive check-up to calmly map everything out. You are always welcome to register again, without any judgement about the time that has passed.
Is one dentist more expensive than another?
No, dental fees in the Netherlands are set by law by the NZa. Every dentist charges the same maximum fees per procedure. Price differences only arise from which treatment is needed or the choice of materials, not from the practice itself. With us, billing runs through Infomedics, so you receive a clear invoice.
What if you are not satisfied with your dentist?
Discuss it with your dentist first, as an open conversation often resolves it. If you cannot work it out together, there is a complaints procedure, at Tandarts West in line with the KNMT. You may also switch to another dentist at any time. We prefer to hear criticism directly, so we can improve.

What to do if you urgently need a dentist?
For urgent complaints during opening hours, call the practice directly on 010 846 6539, and we will try to help you the same day. Outside opening hours we refer you to the regional emergency line, Tandartsenpost010 at the Erasmus MC, in partnership with DENTAL365. This way emergency care is available day and night in Rotterdam.
How much does filling 4 cavities cost?
The cost of filling cavities is calculated per filling and per surface according to the fixed NZa fee, not per practice. Four cavities means four fillings, where the exact amount depends on the size, that is the number of surfaces per filling. Feel free to ask for a cost estimate in advance, so you know exactly where you stand.
What if you don't go to the dentist for 10 years?
After ten years without a check-up there are often unnoticed problems such as cavities, tartar or gum disease. We start with a comprehensive check-up, sometimes with X-rays, and then draw up a treatment plan together that suits you. Even after so many years you are welcome to start again, without judgement.
What if you have no money for the dentist?
Feel free to discuss it with us, we make a clear cost estimate in advance. Through Infomedics a payment plan or paying in instalments is possible. If you have a low income, you can apply for special assistance for dental care from the municipality of Rotterdam.
