Explained without jargon

What does an implantologist do, and what is implantology?

Implantology is the field that replaces missing teeth with dental implants: artificial roots of medical titanium that are placed in the jawbone. Within a few months such an implant fuses with the bone and then serves as a sturdy base for a crown, bridge or overdenture. An implantologist is a dentist who, after studying dentistry, has trained further in placing implants.

At Tandarts West, implantology is carried out by dentists experienced in implantology. We plan every treatment in advance with a 3D CBCT scan, so we know exactly how your jawbone is doing, and the crown comes from our own in-house laboratory so it fits precisely. Since 2013 we have helped patients from all over Rotterdam to fixed teeth this way, and we always tell you honestly whether an implant is the best choice in your situation.

The journey

How implantology works with us, in 4 steps

You know in advance exactly what happens, how long it takes and what it costs. No surprises, but a clear plan.

Intake and 3D imaging

During a no-obligation consultation of 30 to 45 minutes we discuss your wishes and make a 3D CBCT scan of your jaw. That way we see exactly how much healthy jawbone there is. You take a personal treatment plan and a written estimate home with you.

Placement of the implant

Under local anaesthetic we place the titanium implant in your jawbone, which takes 30 to 60 minutes per implant. You mainly feel some pressure, no pain. Afterwards you simply go home on your own.

Healing and fusion

Over 3 to 6 months the implant fuses with your jawbone, which is called osseointegration. During that period you wear a temporary restoration, so you never walk around with a visible gap in your teeth.

The final crown

Our own in-house laboratory makes the final crown, bridge or clip-on denture made to measure. From that moment on you can eat and smile again without giving it a second thought.

Costs and reimbursement

What does implantology cost in Rotterdam?

The cost depends on the number of implants, the type of crown and any preparatory treatment. That is why we do not work with standard prices, but with clarity upfront.

Clarity upfront

We charge the national NZa rates, the same rates as every dentist in the Netherlands. After the consultation with 3D scan you receive a personal written estimate, so you know exactly where you stand.

Above 250 euros such a written estimate is even mandatory. You then decide calmly at home, there is never any pressure to start right away.

Reimbursement through your insurance

For adults, an implant with a crown usually falls under the supplementary dental insurance, and policies differ a lot in what they cover. So look carefully at your own policy or ask us.

Do you get a full denture on implants, such as an overdenture? Then part of it is reimbursed from the basic insurance, though do take into account your excess and a personal contribution. We are happy to help you find out what is reimbursed in your case, feel free to ask your question.

What is the difference between an implantologist and a dentist?
An implantologist is a dentist who, after studying dentistry, has trained further in placing implants. At Tandarts West, implantology is carried out by dentists experienced in implantology, with a 3D CBCT scan for the planning and an in-house laboratory for the crown. During the consultation you will hear honestly what is realistic and achievable in your situation.
Does placing an implant hurt?
No, placement is done under local anaesthetic, so you mainly feel some pressure. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes per implant. Afterwards it can be tender for a few days, comparable to the after-pain of having a tooth pulled. A regular painkiller handles that well.
How long does an implant last?
The implant itself can last a lifetime with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups. The crown on the implant lasts 10 to 15 years on average and can then be replaced without the implant having to come out.
How long does the whole implantology journey take?
Count on 4 to 8 months from intake to the final crown. The implant needs 3 to 6 months to fuse with your jawbone. During that period you wear a temporary restoration, so you never walk around with a gap in your teeth.
What does an implant cost in Rotterdam and is it reimbursed?
The cost depends on the number of implants, the type of crown and any preparatory treatment. We charge the national NZa rates and you always receive a personal written estimate upfront, which is even mandatory above 250 euros. Reimbursement usually runs through your supplementary insurance. A full denture on implants is partly reimbursed from the basic insurance.
Is an implant suitable for me too?
Usually yes. What matters is enough healthy jawbone, healthy gums and good general health. Smoking and untreated gum inflammation reduce the chance of success. With the 3D scan we assess your jawbone and tell you honestly whether an implant is a sensible choice in your situation.
Can my denture be fixed onto implants?
Yes. With usually 2 to 4 implants in the lower or upper jaw we make an overdenture that clips firmly in place and no longer shifts when eating or talking. A full denture on implants is also partly reimbursed from the basic insurance. Read more about it on our page about the overdenture on implants.
How do I care for my implant after placement?
Brush twice a day, clean the space between implant and gum with interdental brushes and come in for regular check-ups. Our dental hygienist teaches you exactly how to keep your implant clean, so it lasts as long as possible.
