What is an overdenture, and when is it the right choice?

An overdenture (also called snap-on denture or implant-supported denture) is a removable denture that snaps onto 2 or 4 dental implants in your jawbone. Much more stable than a traditional denture resting only on gums. The denture doesn't shift when speaking or eating, no more adhesive needed, and your chewing function largely returns.

At Tandarts West, your English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West at Taandersstraat 121, we combine implantology and prosthodontics for a complete solution. For the lower jaw 2 implants are usually sufficient; for the upper jaw we recommend 4 implants for optimal stability.

The Dutch basic insurance often covers a large part of overdenture cost for the lower jaw (with co-payment), based on the national NZa guide prices. For upper jaw or 4-implant variants different rules apply. If you still have some natural teeth, we also look at partial dentures, a regular denture or keeping your teeth.

Dentist examines jawbone with 3D CBCT scan for overdenture (snap-on denture) on 2 or 4 implants at Tandarts West, an English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West.

3 benefits of overdenture

Why overdenture over traditional denture?

Three reasons why most of our denture patients choose the overdenture.

Stability

Denture snaps onto implants and doesn't shift. You can smile, talk and eat carefree again, even hard things like apples or meat.

No adhesive

No messy adhesive or worry about loosening. Snap clips hold the denture firmly. Confidence in every situation.

Jawbone preservation

Dental implants stimulate jawbone and prevent further loss occurring with traditional dentures. Your face shape stays in long term.

FAQ

Overdenture · FAQ

What is an overdenture?
An overdenture (also called a click-on denture, snap-on denture or implant-supported denture) is a removable denture that snaps onto 2 or 4 dental implants in your jawbone. It is much more stable than a traditional denture that rests only on your gums, and no longer shifts when talking or eating.
What is the difference between an overdenture and a traditional denture?
A traditional denture (full denture) rests only on your gums and stays in place through suction and adhesive, and can shift when talking and eating. An overdenture snaps onto 2 or 4 implants in the jawbone, stays firmly in place and gives a much better chewing function. At Tandarts West in Rotterdam West we place both options.
What does an overdenture cost in Rotterdam?
The cost depends on the number of implants (2 or 4), the type of denture and any bone augmentation. At Tandarts West Rotterdam West we make a transparent cost estimate in advance. For an overdenture on 2 implants in the lower jaw the Dutch basic insurance often covers part of the cost (with a co-payment); supplementary insurance can add to this.
Overdenture on 2 or 4 implants, what is the difference?
2 implants are sufficient for the lower jaw (where the jaw ridge is narrow). For the upper jaw (where the denture is less stable) 4 implants are recommended for optimal stability. 4 implants also give more stability and chewing power in the lower jaw, which is a personal choice.
How long does the overdenture process take?
The total process takes 4 to 8 months. First the implants are placed (1 appointment), then a healing period of 3 to 6 months (osseo-integration in the jawbone). During that time you wear a temporary denture. After that we take impressions and make the final overdenture in our dental lab.
Which English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West makes overdentures?
Tandarts West at Taandersstraat 121 in Rotterdam West has an experienced implantologist and its own in-house dental laboratory for the overdenture. Patients from Delfshaven, Middelland, Nieuwe Westen, Bospolder-Tussendijken and Spangen come here for an overdenture. Call 010 846 6539.
Does insurance cover an overdenture?
For an overdenture in the lower jaw on 2 implants the Dutch basic insurance often gives a reimbursement (with a co-payment of 8% for those 65 and over and 17% under 65). For an overdenture in the upper jaw on 4 implants, or a full lower jaw on 4 implants, different reimbursement rules apply. We discuss in advance what is reimbursed in your situation.
How often does an overdenture need replacing?
The denture itself lasts around 7 to 10 years on average before replacement is worthwhile. The clips (snap mechanism) need renewing every 1 to 2 years because they wear. The implants themselves last a lifetime with good oral hygiene.
Can I clean my overdenture myself?
Yes, you click the overdenture out to clean it. Brush it with a soft brush and mild soap (no toothpaste, which is too abrasive). Rinse well. The implants themselves you clean daily with a special interdental brush. A six-monthly check-up at the dentist is essential.
What if I still have some natural teeth?
With partial tooth loss (still some natural teeth) a partial denture is an option, possibly combined with clips on your own teeth. We discuss in your situation whether keeping your own teeth is possible, or whether extraction followed by an overdenture is better.
