What is periodontitis, and why is early detection crucial?
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the gums AND jawbone around teeth, caused by bacteria in tartar under the gum line. It often starts as gum inflammation (gingivitis) and, untreated, progresses to jawbone loss, receding gums, sensitive necks, loose teeth and eventually tooth loss. Globally the #1 cause of adult tooth loss, present in around 50% of adults over 35 in mild-severe form.

For complex or persistent periodontitis we refer to a registered periodontist. We start each treatment with a pocket measurement (DPSI score): a fine probe measures depth between tooth and gum. Healthy is 1-3mm, 4+mm indicates periodontitis. The DPSI (Dutch Periodontal Screening Index) is the national standard used by the KNMT (Royal Dutch Dental Association) and the Dutch Society of Periodontology (NVvP).
Periodontitis often gives no pain in early stage. That's why bi-annual check-ups and annual cleaning matter.
