Dentist rates in Rotterdam: transparent and set nationally
How much does a dentist cost? At Tandarts West on Taandersstraat you pay the national NZa rates, exactly the same as at any other dentist in the Netherlands. On this page you read how those rates work and what sets the price for each treatment. Since 2013, always with a clear estimate in advance.

How much does a dentist cost?
The price is set nationally. The Dutch Healthcare Authority sets the maximum rates every year, so you pay the same per treatment anywhere in the Netherlands. A periodic check-up costs 28,51 euro (code C002), a small X-ray 21,00 euro (X10). Every dentist in the Netherlands uses these codes.
How do dental rates work in the Netherlands?
Unlike what many people think, a dentist does not set the prices. Dental pricing in the Netherlands follows fixed national NZa tariffs, the same rates for every practice. These are the three things you need to know.
The NZa sets the rates
The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) sets the maximum rates for dental care each year. No dentist is allowed to charge above them. That makes the dentist one of the few forms of care where the price is set nationally in advance, regardless of which practice you visit.
Every treatment has a UPT code
The rates are in the Uniforme Particuliere Tarieven (UPT), the uniform private rates. Each action has its own code, for example for a consultation, an X-ray or a filling per surface. Each code has a fixed amount. On your invoice you see exactly which codes were charged, so you can always check what you are paying for.
Everyone charges the same rate per code
Because the codes and rates are the same nationally, you pay the same for the same treatment everywhere. A difference in the final amount comes from the amount of work and from technique or material costs, for example the laboratory that makes a crown. What you get extra with us is time, explanation and an honest estimate in advance, not a higher rate.
The 15 most common dental rates in 2026
These are the national NZa maximum rates. Every dentist in the Netherlands charges the same per code. Below the table you find a real example invoice and all the other codes.
Please note: these are NZa reference rates, the national maximum rates, and not our practice's own prices. A dentist may not charge more, but may charge less. The amounts change annually on 1 January and are valid from 1 January to 31 December 2026.

When do you get a price estimate?
The law has two thresholds. From 250 euro the dentist must give you a price estimate in advance, which may be verbal. From 500 euro that estimate must be in writing or digital. This is set out in the NZa Regeling mondzorg, articles 6.1 and 6.2. At Tandarts West you get a clear estimate below those amounts too, so you are never caught by surprise.
You do not have to pay for a treatment upfront. Our billing runs through Infomedics, which settles the bill directly with your insurer and sends you only the remainder. For larger treatments you can pay in instalments.

How much does a dentist cost in Rotterdam?
Exactly the same as anywhere in the Netherlands. The NZa sets the maximum rates nationally, so a check-up, a filling or a crown costs the same in Rotterdam as in Amsterdam, Groningen or Maastricht. What determines the price per treatment?
For every treatment the same principle applies: the NZa code sets the rate, your situation determines how many codes are needed. Click through for the details per treatment.
Dental check-up
The periodic check-up has a fixed consultation code. What you pay depends on what else is needed, such as X-rays or removing tartar during the same visit.

The hygienist charges per time unit with fixed codes. How much time is needed depends on how much tartar and plaque there is and whether there is gum inflammation.

A filling is charged per surface of the tooth. The more surfaces are affected, the higher the rate. For a white filling the composite material is included in the code.

The rate depends on the number of canals in the tooth. A front tooth with one canal is simpler than a molar with several canals, and you see that difference in the codes.

In addition to the rate for placement, there are technique costs, because a dental laboratory makes the crown or bridge to measure. Those costs are listed separately on your estimate.

For a full denture there are separate prosthetist and technique codes. A full denture is also partly reimbursed from the basic insurance, though with a personal contribution.

Always an estimate in advance
For a treatment above 250 euro you always receive a written estimate first, which is a legal requirement. It lists the NZa codes and any technique costs separately.
For smaller treatments too, we explain in advance what to expect. You decide calmly at home and there is never any pressure to start right away.
Billing and paying in instalments
Our billing runs through Infomedics. They send you a clear invoice listing all treatments, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
For larger treatments, paying in instalments is possible, so you do not have to postpone necessary care. Read more about billing through Infomedics or ask us about the options.

What does your insurance cover?
Whether dental care is reimbursed depends on your age and your policy. These are the main lines, so you know what to look out for.
Children up to 18
For children up to 18, almost all dental care is covered by the basic insurance. Think of check-ups, fillings and tooth extractions. You generally pay nothing extra for that.
Adults
For adults, regular dental care is part of supplementary dental insurance. Policies vary widely in what they cover and up to which amount. So check your own policy carefully.
Deductible
Care from the supplementary dental insurance does not fall under your deductible. That only applies to care from the basic insurance, such as a full denture or special dental care.
