What exactly is safe teeth whitening, and why only at a dentist?

Teeth whitening (also written as tooth whitening) is a cosmetic treatment in which discolouration of the teeth is lightened with a gel based on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. According to the European Directive (Directive 2011/84/EU), this gel may only be prescribed and dispensed by a dentist, with a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide for adults. Products with higher concentrations fall outside EU legislation, even though they are sold online.

At Tandarts West in Rotterdam West, located at Taandersstraat 121, we carry out every whitening treatment within these safety boundaries, as the professional association KNMT advises. Our dentists are KNMT-registered and BIG-registered. Patients from Delfshaven, Middelland, Nieuwe Westen and central Rotterdam come here for a safe whitening treatment under professional supervision. Before the treatment we examine your teeth for tartar, cavities and leaking fillings, so the whitening agent does not penetrate damaged enamel or seep under your fillings. The difference between whitening with us and with a drugstore or online shop lies not only in the result, but above all in the safety: your enamel, gums and existing restorations are protected.

Whether you want to whiten your teeth for a special occasion, or simply want a whiter smile in the long term, our team of 25+ specialists first discusses what is realistic for your situation.

Our 3 safety pillars

How we make sure teeth whitening is truly safe

Three principles that make the difference between a professional whitening treatment and a home experiment with an online product.

Dental check-up first

We first examine whether whitening is advisable for your teeth. No active cavities, no leaking fillings, no inflamed gums, only then do we whiten. That prevents pain and lasting sensitivity.

Concentration within the EU norm

We work exclusively with whitening gel within the European directive (a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide or 16% carbamide peroxide). Higher concentrations damage enamel and gums, even though they are offered online.

Direct supervision and aftercare

During an in-practice treatment a dentist or dental hygienist works with you. For at-home whitening you receive custom-fitted trays and clear aftercare instructions. Any issues after the treatment? Call us straight away.

The process

Safe teeth whitening in 3 steps

Whether you whiten in the practice or at home with a custom-fitted kit, the process always starts with a thorough check.

Introduction and check-up

During a 20-minute intake we assess your teeth, colour and wishes. We discuss realistic expectations and any contraindications.

The whitening treatment

In the practice in one session of 60 to 90 minutes, or at home with custom-fitted trays (1 to 2 weeks, 15 to 30 minutes per day). You choose, in consultation with us.

Aftercare and check-up

You receive written instructions. If needed, there is a short follow-up appointment after 2 weeks to assess the result and your gums.

Safe and professional whitening at the dentist versus whitening at home

What is the difference between professional whitening at the dentist and whitening at home with drugstore or online products? Below you see it without the marketing spin.

Safe

At Tandarts West

  • Dental check-up first, so whitening causes no damage
  • Whitening gel within the EU directive (max 6% hydrogen peroxide)
  • Custom-fitted trays for home use, protecting your gums
  • Result visible for 1 to 3 years with good maintenance
  • A point of contact for questions, complaints or aftercare
  • Transparent NZa (Dutch Healthcare Authority) tariffs, known in advance
Risky

Drugstore, online or foreign strips

  • No dental check-up, whitening agent seeps under leaking fillings
  • Drugstore products are limited to 0.1% peroxide (barely any effect)
  • Online products sometimes contain up to 35% peroxide, not compliant with EU legislation
  • One-size-fits-all strips or trays irritate the gums
  • No dentist to call when something goes wrong
  • Risk: enamel erosion, lasting sensitivity, patchy colour

Frequently asked questions

Safe teeth whitening: everything you want to know

No marketing talk, just honest answers from our dentists.

Yes, teeth whitening at the dentist is safe. We use whitening agents within the European safety directives (a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide for adults) and examine your teeth beforehand for cavities, leaking fillings and gum problems. This way you whiten under professional supervision, without the risks of uncontrolled online or foreign products.
Whitening your teeth under professional supervision is not bad for them, provided it stays within the EU directive (max 6% hydrogen peroxide) and you have a healthy set of teeth. Uncontrolled whitening with online or foreign products (often 35% peroxide) can, however, lead to enamel damage, lasting sensitivity and gum irritation. That is why we believe teeth whitening should always take place at a dentist, not at home with experiments.
Drugstore products are limited to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide and therefore deliver minimal results. Online and foreign products sometimes contain higher concentrations, but without professional supervision you risk enamel damage, gum irritation and lasting sensitivity. A professional whitening treatment works faster and more safely.
We work with BlancOne, a professional whitening system developed by IDS SpA in Italy. BlancOne uses hydrogen peroxide within the European safety directive (max 6%) and is applied exclusively by dentists. Depending on your wishes we use BlancOne Click or Click+ in the practice, or the Home Night+ at-home kit with custom-fitted trays. Other dentists can purchase BlancOne in the Netherlands through BrightDental.nl.
An in-practice whitening session takes about 60 to 90 minutes. For the at-home whitening kit we make custom-fitted trays in one appointment, after which you can whiten at home for 1 to 2 weeks (15 to 30 minutes per day).
A BlancOne Click whitening treatment in the practice takes about 30 minutes for the actual whitening step, within an appointment of 60 to 90 minutes including the check-up and preparation. Cosmetic teeth whitening falls outside the insured package, so there is no fixed NZa tariff for the whitening itself. Dental parts such as a prior check-up we do charge according to the statutory Dutch NZa rates. The price of the treatment depends on your teeth and the chosen variant, which is why you receive a personal cost estimate beforehand during the introductory consultation. Get in touch or call 010 846 6539.

An average result lasts 1 to 3 years, depending on your eating and drinking habits. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking cause the colour to come back faster. With a touch-up every 6 to 12 months you can maintain the result.
Whitening lightens your own natural teeth and is the least invasive and most affordable option for discoloured but healthy teeth. Veneers are thin shells that also correct shape, position and colour, for example with wear, small gaps or a permanently white shade. If you want veneers, we often first whiten your own teeth to the desired colour and then match the veneers to it. During the introductory consultation we advise what suits your situation.
No, whitening agents only work on natural tooth tissue. Composite fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour. Do they have a prominent place in your smile? Then we discuss whether it makes sense to replace them after whitening.
Mild sensitivity to cold can occur in the first 24 to 48 hours. This goes away on its own. During that period we recommend sensitive-teeth toothpaste and avoiding extremely cold or hot drinks.
Teeth whitening is suitable for most adults aged 18 and over with a healthy set of teeth. During pregnancy or breastfeeding we postpone the treatment. In the case of active cavities, inflamed gums or untreated holes, we treat those first, then whiten afterwards.
