What can you do right now about toothache?

Toothache often comes at the worst possible moment, in the evening or at the weekend. A few safe steps can temporarily ease the pain until you can see the dentist. They do not solve the cause, but they help you through the night.

Take a painkiller according to the leaflet, for example paracetamol or ibuprofen. Place a cold compress against the outside of your cheek, rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water and keep your head slightly raised at night with an extra pillow. Chew on the other side and avoid very hot, cold or sweet. Never place an aspirin or clove oil directly on your gums, as that damages the tissue.

Important: toothache rarely goes away on its own. If the pain fades, it can even mean the nerve is dying and the inflammation is spreading. So always make an appointment at Tandarts West, your dentist in Rotterdam West. Read also how good habits prevent problems with your teeth.

Finding the cause

Where does toothache come from?

The right treatment depends on the cause. These are the most common.

A cavity (caries)

The most common cause. First sensitive to sweet, hot or cold, later a nagging pain. Caught in time it is a small filling.

An inflamed nerve

When caries reaches the nerve, a throbbing, persistent pain develops (pulpitis). Often a root canal treatment is needed to save the tooth.

Gums or wisdom tooth

A gum inflammation or an erupting wisdom tooth causes pressure and pain at the back of the mouth, sometimes with a swollen cheek.

Watch for these signs

When should you call a dentist fast?

Usually toothache can wait until the next appointment. With these signs you call quickly.

1

Swollen cheek

A swollen cheek or face can point to an abscess or spreading infection. Call the same day.

2

Fever or malaise

Fever, chills or feeling ill with toothache is a reason to get in touch quickly.

3

Pain persists

Throbbing pain that does not respond to painkillers or keeps you awake should be assessed soon.

4

Swallowing or breathing

Difficulty swallowing, opening your mouth or breathing is an alarm sign. Contact us directly or go to the emergency department.

Tandarts West can be reached during opening hours on 010 846 6539. Outside opening hours you will find the regional emergency line on our emergency page. This information is general guidance and does not replace personal advice from your dentist.

Frequently asked questions

Toothache · frequently asked questions

What can you do about toothache at night?
Take a painkiller according to the leaflet, place a cold compress against your cheek, keep your head raised and rinse with lukewarm salt water. Never place an aspirin on your gums. Call your dentist in Rotterdam West the next morning, because toothache rarely goes away on its own.
Does toothache go away on its own?
Usually not. The cause remains even if the pain eases. Fading pain can even mean the nerve is dying. Always have toothache assessed.
What are the most common causes of toothache?
A cavity (caries), an inflamed tooth nerve, a gum inflammation, a cracked molar and an erupting wisdom tooth. A leaking old filling or crown can also cause pain.
When should I see a dentist immediately with toothache?
With a swollen cheek, fever, persistent throbbing pain, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. These can be signs of an abscess. Call 010 846 6539 during opening hours, or check our emergency page outside opening hours.
Do I immediately need a root canal treatment?
Not always. A small cavity is often solved with a filling. Only with an inflamed or dead nerve is a root canal treatment needed. We determine this with an examination and usually an X-ray.
Can I come if I am not a patient yet?
Yes. Call 010 846 6539, we look during opening hours at what is possible. You can then easily register online as a new patient, usually without a waiting list.
Does clove help against toothache?
Clove oil can soothe the pain briefly, but does not solve the cause and can irritate the gums. Better to use a regular painkiller according to the leaflet and make an appointment.
