Standard composite
For small-medium cavities in front teeth and molars. Aesthetically perfect, easy color matching. Lasts 7-10 years with good hygiene.
Filling a cavity no longer requires silver amalgam. At Tandarts West, your English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West, we place aesthetic white composite fillings that seamlessly bond to your tooth. For larger cavities we use fiber-reinforced composite for extra strength and durability.

A white composite filling lasts 7 to 12 years on average. We choose composite over amalgam because it is mercury-free, bonds directly to your tooth and matches your natural tooth color. We have not placed amalgam since 2018. A filling is not permanent, but it does last for years.
A white filling (technical term: composite filling) is an aesthetic tooth-colored filling to restore cavities (caries). Composite consists of resin and fine glass particles, applied in the right color, built up in layers and cured with a UV lamp. Invisible, mercury-free, for both front teeth and molars.
At Tandarts West, your English-speaking dentist in Rotterdam West at Taandersstraat 121, we no longer place amalgam fillings. Per European regulations (Minamata Convention) amalgam is being phased out for environmental and health reasons. For larger cavities we use fiber-reinforced composite for extra strength. Your filling is often placed by experienced all-round dentist Nilgun Dogan.
A good filling requires: dry working environment (rubber dam), careful layered composite buildup, and proper polishing for seamless finish. Not all tooth damage is a cavity: acid erosion can wear down enamel too. If a tooth stays briefly sensitive after a filling, read more about sensitive teeth.

Not all fillings are the same. We choose the right material for your situation.

The price does not depend on our practice, but on the fixed Dutch NZa tariff and the number of surfaces the filling covers.
A molar has several sides: the chewing surface on top and the sides in between. Each side is called a surface. A small cavity on one side is a single-surface filling. If the cavity runs across several sides, it becomes a multi-surface filling.
The more surfaces a filling covers, the more work and material it takes, and the higher the NZa tariff. The dentist counts the surfaces exactly during treatment, when it is clear how far the cavity runs.
Dutch dental tariffs are not free-market: the NZa sets them each year, the same for every practice. You will find a full overview on our rates page. Under 18, a filling is fully covered by Dutch basic insurance.
